What's it like having a dad?

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

It's just another support beam I'd assume. My mom and my dad have been pretty absent from my life. My dad and my mom divorced when I was 3 years old after a lot of fighting that I witnessed and he has been pretty much gone most of my life. I see him a couple times a year maybe, call him a few times a month, but, he's an alcoholic and completely dependent on other people to keep him afloat. He's sort of a tragedy of a human being, brilliant man really, never pulled it together. I'll probably end up a lot like him sadly.

My mom, left alone by my and my brothers' fathers, spent most of her time taking care of her leech of a boyfriend who drained us; she was too weak to let him go. She also had to watch over Beck intensely as he did drugs and drank himself almost out of school. I was always on the backburner in both of their lives. Sure, I mattered to them, they just had bigger fish to fry (personal issues with my dad and more troubled family members with my mom, along with her extreme work schedule). The only person who raised me as a kid was my older brother Carl, and he moved out when I was around 10 years old. Through the pre-teen and teen years, I pretty much raised myself. My mom has been more significant in my life the past couple of years since she lost her job and has essentially retired, but, obviously, it is pretty late for that as I have passed my most significant developing years. We fight a lot too, since we really don't know each other that well and never forged a bond when I was younger. This forum actually served as one of my support beams throughout that time of my life.

Fathers are people. And people are flawed. They are a sperm donor. Your mother is the egg donor. If they choose to be significant past that, it is of their own volition. If not, you must find your own way. Not everyone has the luxury of two stable parents. Even one sometimes. That's life. If it destroys you, then, you were too weak anyway. If you prevail, you'll be more successful because of it. It's natural selection at the level of humanity.

The one thing that I think gets overlooked most when you grow up without a father is that I have absolutely no idea how to be a father myself. Even those of you with awful dads have this idea of what you don't want to be. I am, and will always be, absolutely terrified of failing as a dad because I was created by a man with no sense of responsibility.
Then again, as many of you have said, I wouldn't really want him as a father anyway. And even if I know nothing, I'm doing better than him by knowing that I will be there regardless of what happens.

But anyway, that's a bit sombre. To answer the actual question, having a dad is clearly overrated, as each of us shows. ;)

Mine was a POS. Haven't seen him for years and don't intend to. Made my life hell.

Necifix, I don't mean to sound patronizing, but you're not your father and you never will be. I'm nothing like mine. You're your own man. Remember that.

That's awful, I think everyone needs a good fatherly figure in there lives. I'm so sorry to hear that you don't have one. :'(
My dad and I are best friends, we do almost everything together, I can turn to him for absolutely anything, not to mention he's hilarious too. My dad has alot of life experience as well, I mean, the guy had traveled across the entire country 3 times by the time he was my age (21). He also has tons of street smarts, and amazing literary skills, the mans a walking dictionary...weird combo huh.
Anyway...thats exactly what I think a father should be, somebody who you can turn to for anything, have alot of life experience so he can answer all the questions you might have...I'm sorry, will have, and...be your best friend.
